Buckingham House ~ Duple

Buckingham House ~ 3 Couple Buckingham House ~ Duple

Buckingham House ~ Duple is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1718 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, 3rd ed., London. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (mod) in 1960 and published in Another Look at Playford. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: G Minor.

John Young published two figures to this music (and name). The first was a duple minor dance published in 1710, and the second, this one, was first published in 1718 and is for a triple minor.

Playford writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

The first Man go the whole Figure on his side, and the Woman on her side at the same Time Then the first Couple cross over and Back to Back, then the Man on the Woman's side, and the Woman on the Man's side at the same Time Then cast up to Top and slip down into the second Couple's Place, and fall back, sides, then the first Man lead thro' the Top and the Woman lead thro' the Bottom at the same Time Then the first Couple lead thro' the third Couple, and turn in the second couple's Place

Originally a triple minor. I modified Pat Shaw's interpretation by using one of Gary Roodman's interwoven heys to turn this into a duple minor.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, figure eight, hey, mirror hey, interwoven hey, hey for three, lead and cast, siding, cross go below, back to back (and probably others).
