Buzzards Bay is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Pat Shaw (website) in about 1977 and published in Among the Pines. It is a 3 Couple Longways dance with the 2s improper. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 40 bars.
The exact date of this dance has been lost. Pat Shaw died in 1977, so it was before that. The dance was published posthumously in 1983.
Buzzard's Bay is a bay off southern Massachusetts (near Martha's Vineyard).
In B1 (the dip and dive hey) Pat says On reaching the ends, couples should turn as a couple, the man turning his partner under his arm if he so desires, that's a California twirl for the 3s, and a reverse California twirl for the 1s+2s.
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: circle, cast, lead, hands across, hey, mirror hey, shetland hey, calfornia twirl, cross go below, back to back, (and probably others).
