Roger ~ 3 Couple

Roger ~ 3 Couple Roger

Roger ~ 3 Couple is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 24 bars.

The Neals write:

1st cu: turn both hands and cast off into 2d cu: place:
Turn again and cast off into 3d cu: place:
1st ma: turn's 2d wo: wth his right hand, his partner at ye same time turning 3d man wth her right hand, meet 'twixt the 2d & 3d cups. and turn both hands to ye left:
1st ma: turn's 3d wo: wth his right hand, his partner at ye same time turning 2d man wth her right hand, meet again and turn both hands to ye left:
1st cu: lead thrô 3d cu: cast up and turn in 2d cu: place wth both hands to ye right:
Then lead thrô 2d cu: cast off and turn both hands to ye left:

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, lead and cast (and probably others).
