Whitsun Holiday

Whitsun Holiday is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 48 bars. It is in the key: G Major.

The Neals write:

1^st cu: sett, cast off & turn in 2^d cu: place:
2^d cu: y^e same into their own placs:
1^st cu: take both hands & slip down thrô 2 or 3 cus: & shuffle, y^e same up again & shuffle, 1^st ma: & 2^d wo: change places, 1^st wo: & 2^d ma: y^e same & clap half round their own hands:
2^d cu: take both hands & slip up & shuffle, y^e same down again & shuffle, two first cu: back to back & right and left:

In 1718 Playford (and Walsh) published a dance named Whitsun Holidays which shares the same tune but has different figures.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, circle, cast, lead, rights and lefts, back to back (and probably others).
