The Three Pound Note is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Bob Lilley in 1987 and published in Bob Lilley's Nightmarish (and Other) Dances. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 32 bars. Someone thought this dance was Very Hard.
In 1987 (when this dance was devised), there were no £3 notes in circulation. The only denominations were £1, £5, £10, £20, and £50. (There was a 10s/50p note which was designed but never actually issued).
In 1813 Tuam Bank (an Irish Country Bank with the power to issue notes) produced £3 notes; they seem to have issued notes based on Irish and English pounds (but I've only found a picture of the Irish note).
The Amphthill Hey is a modified version of one used by the Redbornstoke Morris (sadly, now defunct). Ampthill is a town in Bedfordshire, and derives from the Anglo-Saxon Æmethyll which means "Ant-hill".
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, cast, hey, rights and lefts, (and probably others).
