A Health to all Honest Men ~ Herman is an English Country Dance. It was published by Walsh in 1718. It was interpreted by Fried de Metz Herman (website) in about 1989 and published in Choice Morsels. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. The tune is a jig. It is in the key: G Minor.
Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over. The 1st and 2d Men sett to their Partners, and turn all four single, then turn Sides Then Sett and turn single all four and turn your Partners The 1st Man change Places with the 2d Wo. and the first Wo. with the Man, and cast off The 1st Man take his Partner by both Hands and draw her quite round the first Cu. and round the 2d Cu. into the 2d Cu. Place
Fried attributes this dance to Walsh, but the earliest example I've found from Walsh was published in 1719:
Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over. The 1st and 2d Men set to their Partners, and turn single, then turn Sides Then Set and turn single all four and turn your Partners The 1st Man change Places with the 2d Wo. and the first Wo. with the 2d Man, and cast off The 1st Man take his Partner by both Hands and draw her quite round the 1st Cu. and round the 2d Cu. into the 2d Cu. Place
Note: the figure of this dance (though not the music) is the same as the figure for John the Mad Man, published 1726.
The tune was published by John Young with the dance and the music was synthesized by Colin Hume's software.
The animation plays at 113 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, cast, lead, poussette, draw poussette, cast and lead, (and probably others).
