Ross Meor ~ Williams

Ross Meor ~ Williams Ross Meor ~ RSCDS

Ross Meor ~ Williams is an English Country Dance. It was published by Walsh in 1735 in Caledonian Country Dances, 2d Edition, London. It was interpreted by George Williams in 2024. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 28 bars.

First published by Walsh in 1735, later by Johnson, and Wright in 1740, with more publications later.

Walsh writes:

Note: Each Strain twice.

The 1st. and 2d. Men lead thro' the two We. the We. lead thro' the Men and all turn S. the 1st. Cu. whole figure thro' the 2d. Cu. and sett and cast off cross over round 3d. Cu. Lead thro' the 3d. Cu. and thro' the 2d. Cu. right and left with the 3d. Cu.

The music is in cut time and consists of an 8 bar strain (repeated) and a 12 bar strain

If the 1s do a whole figure then the cross over in the B part will leave them improper. So I assume the deviser intended a half figure eight.

After Lead thro' the 3d. Cu. and thro' the 2d. Cu. the 1s will be at the top, but they need to end in the middle so they can right and left with the 3s. I presume there is an implied "and cast down" in this sequence.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
