Shawbury Park

Shawbury Park is an English Country Dance. It was published by Playford (John Young) (website) in 1710 in The Dancing Master, Vol. the Second, London. It was interpreted by Tom Cook in 1975 and published in Come Let's Be Merry. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars. It is in the key: G minor.

Playford writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

The first Couple go with inside of the second Couple, then on the outsie of the third Couple, and lead up to the Top and cast off; then the second Couple do the same. This to the first Strain play'd twice Then the first and second Men Sett to their Partners, and take Hands and go quite round, then lead between the second Couple and cast up, then Right and Left Hands half round. This to the last Strain play'd twice

The tune was published, by Playford (John Young), with the dance Shawbury Park. It was performed by the Odd Sundays Garage Band (Judy Linsenberg, Shira Kammen and Patti Cobb). The music is used with permission from the Odd Sundays Garage Band.

The animation plays at 99 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: set, turn single, circle, cast, lead, rights and lefts, lead and cast, down the middle and back, set and turn corners (and probably others).
