The Gallopping Nagg

The Gallopping Nagg is an English Country Dance. It was published by John & William Neal in 1726 in A Choice Collection of Country Dances. It was interpreted by Rich Jackson & George Fogg in 1990. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 40 bars.

Playford published two different choreographies called "The Gallopping Nag". Neither matches this choreography, nor this tune. (To add to the confusion Playford at first called the dance "Black Nag(g)")

The Neals write:

1^st ma: beckon's to 2^d so: w^th his right finger, she y^e same to him at y^e same time, then he y^e same w^th his left & and she y^e same, turn single & turn both hands:
1^st wo: & 2^d ma: y^e same:
2 first cu: right hands across half round clap on another's hands, then left hands back:
2 first cu: shuffle, clap on another's hands, right & left till 1^st cu: to 2^d cu: place:

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, turn single, hands across, rights and lefts (and probably others).
