The Hunter's Drift

The Hunter's Drift is a Scottish Country Dance. It was devised by Remco Knooihuizen in 2012. It is a proper Triple Minor dance. R32. An online description of the dance may be found here.

This dance has a very unusual progression pattern for a three couple dance in a four couple set, so unusual that I've never seen it used before. On the other hand it is very common for a three couple dance in a three couple set (which means it can also be danced with that starting formation).

When we danced this in Santa Barbara we found there was not enough movement for the first 8 bars. We either had to take 4 bars to do the initial cast (which felt very slow), or we threw in two bars of setting at the very beginning. I recommend the setting.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, cast, lead, hey, cross go below, corners pass and turn, waltzing turn poussette (and probably others).
