The Regent's Hornpipe

The Regent's Hornpipe is an English Country Dance. It was published by Unknown in about 1815 in Again Let's Be Merry. It was interpreted by Tom Cook in 1979. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

Tom Cook says this comes from "an unidentified Collection", and implies it is from the 19th century. The only (British) regent in the 19th century was the Prince Regent (later George IV) who was regent from 1811 to 1820.

(I am unable to identify the source of this dance either).

Cook recommends dancing this with "a mixture of hornpipe or rant steps and dance-walk steps, the former being used for the first two bars, the part of the hey without hands, and the lead up in B1".

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), set, lead, hey (and probably others).
