The Hop-Pickers' Feast ~ Hume
The Shepherd and Shepherdess or The Hop-Pickers' Feast ~ Hume is an English Country Dance. It was published by Johnson in about 1758 in Two Hundred Favourite Country Dances, Vol. 8, London. It was interpreted by Bernie Culkin, Colin Hume (website) in 2022 and published in Colin Hume's Website. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 48 bars.
Johnson writes:
Set and hands 3 with the 2d. Wo. set and hands 3 with the 2d. Man Cross over two Cu. Lead up to the top and cast off hands 4 round at Bottom ∴ Right hands and Left at top ∴
Colin Hume points out that this has the same figure (but different music) as The Hop Pickers' Feast found in Thompson's "Twenty-Four Country Dances for the Year 1786" and interpreted by A. Simons in "Kentish Hops".
The tune was published by Johnson with the dance, and the music was synthesized by Colin Hume.
The animation plays at 109 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
