The active couple casts off, goes down at least to the bottom of the minor set, acknowledges each other, and casts back up to the top.
The earliest example I can find is from Preston's Trip to Tunbridge from 1793. but I wouldn't be surprised if there were earlier ones.
This figure was very common in Elias Howe's contra dances from ~1860.
