Chloe's Farewell ~ 3 Couple

Chloe's Farewell ~ 3 Couple Chloe's Farewell ~ Triple

Chloe's Farewell ~ 3 Couple is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Young in 1718. It was interpreted by George Williams in 2025. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 231. The minor set lasts 32 bars.

John Young writes:

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

First Wo. Figure thro' the 3d Cu. then Outside the 2d. Wo. to her Place, the 2d Man go the whole Figure thro' the 3d Cu. at the same Time First Man and 2d Wo. do the same First Man take his Partner by both Hands and lead her on the Outside below the 2d Man, Sett to the 3d Wo. then to the 3d Man, and turn Sides quite round First Wo. cast up and go to her Partner's Place, he follows her at the same Time, then go round each other proper, and turn down the Middle

In the first part W1 and M2 are doing a figure eight around the 3s. But W1 only does a Figure while M2 does a whole Figure. Is this significant? or is it just Young being imprecise in his wording. W1 has a long way to go, so my guess is that this means that she will loop around M3, then (skipping W3) go outside W2, while M2 will do a more usual whole figure eight. I also think it makes sense for M2 to start first rather than waiting for W1 to pass him.

In B1 I think Young is saying that the 1s do a poussette to between the 2s and 3s (who stand still). But there seems far too much going on here to fit into 8 bars: We have a half poussette (4 bars), a set to W3 (2 bars) another set to M3 this time (2 bars), and a neighbor turn (4 bars). Perhaps the 1s could set half to W3 and half to M3? A turn can be done in two bars... Or the setting could be left entirely out...

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
