My Lord Byron's Maggot ~ Pat Shaw

My Lord Byron's Maggot ~ Pat Shaw My Lord Byron's Maggot ~ Sharp

My Lord Byron's Maggot ~ Pat Shaw is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1701 in The Dancing Master, 11th ed., London. It was interpreted by Pat Shaw (website) in about 1965 and published in Another Look at Playford. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 28 bars.

Playford writes:

The 1. man beckons the 2. wo. to him, and she beckons him back again and turn The other do the same The two men lead through the women, and clap hands all four and cast off.

This is essentially the same as Sharp's interpretation except that Sharp has two rounds of clapping with partner, while Shaw has one round with partner and one with neighbor. Personally I think it would make more sense to start clapping with neighbor and then clap with partner (rather than the reverse order) as the men will naturally be facing each other.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead (and probably others).
