The Happy Captive ~ Bolton

The Happy Captive ~ Apted #1 The Happy Captive ~ Apted #2 The Happy Captive ~ Bolton

The Happy Captive ~ Bolton is an English Country Dance. It was published by Thompson in 1777 in Twenty four Country Dances for the year 1777, London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in about 2004 and published in Retreads Vol.10. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 312. The minor set lasts 40 bars.

Thompson writes:

Lead thro' the 3d. Cu: & cast up one the Gentn. hands round 3 at bottom & his Partner at top lead thro' the 2d. & cast off. the Gentn. hands round three at top & his Partner at bottom lead down up cast off lead outsides

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
