Down the Outside and Back The active couple casts off, goes down at least to the bottom of the minor set, acknowledges each other, and casts back up to the top.

History

The earliest example I can find is from Preston's Trip to Tunbridge from 1793. but I wouldn't be surprised if there were earlier ones.

This figure was very common in Elias Howe's contra dances from ~1860.
