Crosbey Square ~ Hume

Crosbey Square ~ Hume Crosbey Square ~ Sharp Crosbey Square ~ Bolton

Crosbey Square ~ Hume is an English Country Dance. It was published by Henry Playford (website) in 1701 in The Dancing Master, 11th ed.. It was interpreted by Colin Hume (website) in 2025 and published in Colin Hume's Website. It is a proper Duple Minor dance. The minor set lasts 20 bars. The tune is a jig. It is in the key: A Major.

Variously spelled: Crosbey-Square, Crosby Square, Crosby-Square, and Crossbey-Square.

Playford writes:
The 1st. couple cast off and clap hands, then they are in second couples place; the second couple do the same; To the first Strain twice Then they draw the first couple into the second, and the second into the first's place, then right and left, then 1st couple cast off and turn so to the end of the Tune. Second Strain twice.

The music was published by Playford with the dance, and it was synthesized by Colin Hume's software.

The animation plays at 113 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily (no music plays during this slow set). Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

An online description of the dance may be found here.

The dance contains the following figures: hand turn (allemande), cast, lead, draw poussette, hey, circular hey (and probably others).
