Stingo

The Oyle of Barley

Stingo or The Oyle of Barley is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Playford (website) in 1651 in The English Dancing Master, London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 1989 and published in Retreads Vol.4. It is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. It is a USA dance. The minor set lasts 120 bars. It is in the key: G Minor.

Playford writes:
Back all, meet again Lead up a D. forwards and back Men take right hands across and go round, set and turn S. We. as much with the left hand

Sides all That again All a D. to the left hand, back again, set and turn S. As much to the right hand

Arms all That again First cu. cross and set each to the second, then to the third, come to hour places on the ouside of the second First cu. cast off, turn short to your places, turn your own, cast off again, all fall to the lower end

The arming (third) figure is progressive. It may be repeated three times, or the whole dance may be, to return dancers to their starting point. Bolton suggests just repeating the arming figure, the first two only as an introduction.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
