Love in a Hop-Yard

Love in a Hop-Yard is an English Country Dance. It was devised by Nathaniel Kynaston in 1717 and published in Twenty Four New Country Dances for the Year 1717. It was interpreted by Andrew Shaw in 2006 and published in Emperor of the Moon. Originally a Triple Minor this version is a proper 3 Couple Longways dance. In this dance the couples are permuted by: 312. The minor set lasts 24 bars. The tune is in triple time.

I can't find the original online. Kynaston wrote:

Note: Each Strain twice.

The 1st. cu. take hands with the 2d. wo. go half round, lead through the 3d. cu. & cast up then take hands with the 2d. man, go half round & turn, all three turn single the 1st. wo. cast off & go outside below the 3d. man, the 1st. man at the same time follow her & go outside below the 3d wo. meet, cut two Capers very clean & turn single then the 1st. man cast up & go above the 2d. man to his place, the 1st. wo. at the same time follow him & go above the 2d. wo. to her place, clap hands twice & cast off

-- The Library of Congress

John Young republished it in 1718

Note: Each Strain is to be play'd twice over.

The first Cu. take Hands with the 2d. Wo. go half round, lead thro' the 3d Cu. and cast up Then take Hands with the 2d Man, go half round and turn all three single Then first Wo. cast off and go on the Outside below the 3d Man, the first Man (at the same Time) follow her, and go on the Outside below the 3d Wo. meet and cut two Capers and turn single Then first Man cast up and go above 2d Man to his Place, the first Wo. (at the same Time) follow him and go above the 2d Wo. to her Place, then clap Hands twice and cast off

Andrew Shaw points out that the names this dance and Love and Honour tended to be mixed up. The earliest edition of this dance was called Love in a Hop-Yard.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

The dance contains the following figures: turn single, circle, cast, lead, (and probably others).
