Northern Nancy ~ Bolton

Northern Nancy ~ Kennedy Northern Nancy ~ Bolton

Northern Nancy ~ Bolton is an English Country Dance. It was published by John Playford (website) in 1670 in The Dancing Master, 4th ed., London. It was interpreted by Charles Bolton (website) in 2000 and published in Retreads Vol.8. Originally proper this version is an indecent duple minor longways dance. It is a multipart dance. The minor set lasts 96 bars.

Playford writes:
Lead up all forward and back, the 1. man and 2. wo. go back to back and fall into their own places, the 1. wo. and 2. man do as much The 2. man take hands and turn once and an half, and the 2. wo. as much at the same time, then turn your own. Do this to the last.
The 1. man and wo. cross over into the 2. place, then cross over into the 3. place Then lead up the middle to the top and cast off into the second place, then take hands and turn round. Do this Change to the last.

Playford has each figure danced until it everyone is back to places, but Bolton interleaves them.

The original was a proper triple minor.

The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance will often be slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.
